I don’t know about you, but sometimes challenges make me nervous. I get into a comfortable routine and then I encounter a challenge. It can be a natural human reaction to choose the easiest way around the obstacle, but that is not always the best way. There are times when I really love a good challenge, but I have always had a hard time stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing my limits.
My uneasiness with challenges has to do with my perception of myself: sometimes I don’t think I have what it takes to climb that mountain and conquer it. I am a perfectionist (recovering!), so I don’t like the idea of failing and I tend to avoid doing things I think I will fail at. But I realize that the barriers in my own mind have sabotaged any rewards that may come from victory. When I am faced with a challenge and I start to doubt myself , I remind myself to rise and meet the challenge before me. I don’t have to face every challenge all at once, I just have to focus on the mountain right in front of me at the moment.
I have found that dealing with challenge and difficulty in a positive way comes with practice, and what better way to practice than to face challenges! My prayer has often been “God, help me rise to the challenges set before me”!
